Paul Halley
Paul Halley is Director of Music and Organist at the Cathedral Church of All Saints, Halifax, where he conducts a semi-professional choir in weekly services of Holy Eucharist, monthly Evensongs, and various celebrations of Lessons and Carols during the church year in a cathedral building that could claim the most beautiful architecture and acoustics in Canada.

The Choir of All Saints Cathedral
The Cathedral Choir, under Paul Halley’s direction, comprises a 20-voiced ensemble of professional singers and choral scholars from the city of Halifax and environs who provide the choral music at weekly services and special events at The Cathedral Church of All Saints in Halifax. The Cathedral Choir has played a central role in the many official provincial and national occasions which take place in Nova Scotia. These have included the Service to Celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of HM The Queen’s Coronation, the Commemorative Service in Celebration of the Life of HM Queen Elizabeth II, and in the previous year, the Commemorative Service for HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, organized by Office of the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia and held at The Cathedral of All Saints. The choir is also presented in two seasonal concerts each year, ‘A ROSE IN WINTER - A Celebration of Christmas in Song & Story’ in December, and ‘PASSION - Music of A Thousand Years’ in the late Lenten season. 'A Rose In Winter'
A celebration of Christmas in song and story

The Choir of All Saints Cathedral, Halifax, directed by Paul Halley

'A Rose in Winter', now in its third year, is the successor to fifteen years of 'A King’s Christmas', presented while Paul Halley was director of the King’s Chapel Choir. This in turn was the successor to fifteen years of Christmas Angelicus concerts in Connecticut with Chorus Angelicus and Gaudeamus, choirs Paul and his wife founded in 1992. And before that, 'A Chorister’s Christmas' was the celebration of the season at The Cathedral of St. John The Divine in New York where Paul was Director of Music. In this long tradition, a guest artist/narrator was engaged to help select and present the readings, but this year, Halley will select from among his choir to handle the narration of poetry and stories, since among these accomplished singers lay the not-so-hidden talents of actors, comedians, and poets.

'PASSION - Music of A Thousand Years'

The Choir of All Saints Cathedral, Halifax, directed by Paul Halley

‘Passion: Music of A Thousand Years’ is a concert presentation of a millennium’s worth of stunningly beautiful choral music that will take place in Halifax on Sunday, April 2, 2023 at 4:00 pm. Directed by Paul Halley, members of The Cathedral Choir of All Saints Cathedral in Halifax will showcase choral works in a fluid choreography that will surround the audience with powerful and ethereal music, sung from various locations within the grand, landmark historic building that is the Cathedral Church of All Saints. The music presented in this concert was written at points throughout the last one thousand years in commemoration of the forty days leading up to Easter, a period in the Church year known as Lent. Over the centuries, poets and composers have taken inspiration from the biblical narratives of the Passion, the Psalms, and Old Testament prophets, to create works of astonishing depth and beauty. The dramatic power of these texts has drawn out the most exquisite music from some of the greatest musicians over the last 1,000 years. From 11th century Gregorian chant, through Tallis and Byrd, and Shaker songs and African American Spirituals, to Poulenc and contemporary composers, the works on this program represent an enormous range of expression.

'A Rose In Winter'
A celebration of Christmas in song and story

The Choir of All Saints Cathedral, Halifax, directed by Paul Halley

with guest artist, Old Man Luedecke

Christmas is back! After a three-year hiatus, Grammy winner Paul Halley showcases his signature choir, The Choir of All Saints Cathedral, in a live concert performance celebrating Christmas. Entitled 'A Rose In Winter', this concert of song and story is a continuation of the Christmas concert tradition at the Cathedral that Halley established in 2008 upon his arrival in Halifax. The Cathedral Choir and Paul Halley will be joined by guest, Old Man Luedecke, in a reprise of his 2019 appearance in the genial role of narrator - to read and recite, to sing, and to, no doubt, play the banjo. A two-time Juno Award-winning Canadian singer-songwriter, Old Man Luedecke delivers narrative-driven folk songs with a storyteller's heart. About the choir, Paul Halley remarks, “This is a spectacular group of young musicians. The vibrancy and fullness of sound and high level of musical accomplishment make this the best choir I’ve worked with.”

Paul Halley remarks: "This coming Sunday afternoon (November 3rd) at 4:00 p.m. the King’s Chapel Choir will be presenting their annual “For All the Saints” concert at All Saints Cathedral. Our featured piece will be Alfred Schnittke’s Requiem, which we performed seven years ago. The audience response was pretty wild, as is the work itself.
I first encountered Schnittke’s compositions when I toured what was then the Soviet Union in 1984 and I was overwhelmed by the grit and power of his music. His voice was, and still is, utterly unique. He is steeped in the European tradition but is fearless in drawing from all manner of genres and styles. His Requiem is truly the most dramatic, I would even say, shocking setting of the text that I have ever heard. Scored for choir, soloists, trumpet, trombone, organ, piano, celeste, electric bass and guitar, and a huge array of percussion instruments, this Mass for the Dead is a haunting portrayal of chaos, despair, and darkness, but also of profound hope and exquisite beauty. Whatever happens, I can guarantee it’s not going to be one of those “well, that was nice” concerts!"

The University of King's College Chapel Choir suspended its cycle of Bach masterworks for one year
to present another great pillar of the Baroque repertoire – the Vespers of 1610 by Claudio Monteverdi.
A monumental work scored for soloists, choir, and orchestra, the Vespers foreshadowed the religious masterworks
of Bach and Handel and has earned a place in the history of western music as a revolutionary and now iconic work.
