Requiem For Dmitri
Parts for piano (I&II), harpsichord (& piano I) and organ
PEL4009-Piano, Organ and Harpsichord
A TRIO FOR PIANO, ORGAN AND HARPSICHORD
A multi-themed work of great power and beauty. Originally created as a choral work, with texts from Pushkin and Ahkmatova, in memory of the great Russian folkloric musician, Dmitri Pokrovsky. Halley's ability to manifest the majesty of Russian and this extraordinary musician is uncanny. This work premiered at The Cathedral of St. John The Divine at the Winter Solstice 1996 celebration, featuring The Pokrovsky Ensemble and The Paul Winter Consort. Paul Halley later adapted the work for three keyboards to include it as the finale of his 'Triptych' CD.
A Full Score is not necessary for this work since the Harpsichord and Organ frequently double the Piano II part.
Included on the Pelagosmusic recording "Triptych", featuring keyboard works of Paul Halley (PEL1003)
The choral version of this piece, "Requiem For Dmitri", is among our choral works in the original SATB version.

COMPOSER'S NOTES
Paul Halley
'The Winter Solstice of 1996 was tinged with sadness for many of us since Dmitri Pokrovsky had died at a far too early age that summer. Nonetheless, the Prokovsky Ensemble still wanted to sing at the Solstice and I wrote this as a choral work for them in Dmitri's honor. As to the Triptych CD, I didn't know whether the music would stand on its own without the extraordinary timbre of the voices of the ensemble or the beautiful poetry of Anna Akhmatova and Pushkin. I still don't know but I wanted to end the album with this piece in honor of the memory of one of this century's most courageous and generous musicians.'
