In Dulci Jubilo
SATB choral/organ score
PEL5034-Choir and Organ
AN ARRANGEMENT OF THE TRADITIONAL CAROL FOR SATB CHOIR AND ORGAN
This beloved German hymn, with a tune from the 14th century and words in Latin and English by Heinrich Suso (1295-1361) trans. R. L. Pearsall, is majestically set in a joyful and increasingly inventive setting. The first verse opens in the conventional fashion, but by the second verse Halley has moved into Renaissance-style accompaniment. The third (choir only) verse is a tender expression where signature Halley harmonies and rhythms come to the fore, culminating in the fourth and final verse with its descant in the soprano line soaring into the heavens.

Texts
In Dulci Jubilo
Words: Heinrich Suso ( 1295-1366)
Music: German melody, 14th century, arranged by Paul Halley (1952 - )
1 In dulci jubilo
Let us our homage shew;
Our heart's joy reclineth
In praesepio
And like a bright star shineth,
Matris in gremio
Alpha es et O.
2 O Jesu parvule,
I yearn for thee alway,
Hear me, I beseech thee,
O Puer optime!
My prayer let it reach thee,
O princeps gloriae!
Trahe me post te!
3 O Patris caritas,
O Nati lenitas!
Deeply were we stained
Per nostra crimina;
But thou for us hast gained
Coelorum gaudia.
Qualis gloria!
4 Ubi sunt gaudia,
If that they be not there?
There are angels singing
Nova cantica,
There the bells are ringing
In Regis curia.
O that we were there!
Words: Heinrich Suso (c.1295-1361); trans. R. L. Pearsall
