Nobile Claret Opus
Choral/organ score
PEL2091-Choir and Organ
A WORK FOR SATB CHOIR AND ORGAN
This setting of the text by Abbot Suger (1081-1151), excerpted from the original inscription on the gilded bronze doors of the west façade of Abbey Church of Saint-Denis, Paris, is a rich and elegant homage to the beauty of noble structures, including relationships, that lead through life's many passages to the True Light.
Composed for Katherine Allidah Muller and Nathaniel Forbes Race Rogers in honour of their wedding, May 19, 2012.
The groom, an architect, chose the Abbot Suger text for the couple's wedding.

Nobile claret opus, sed opus quod nobile claret,
Clarificet mentes ut eant per lumina vera
Ad verum lumen, ubi Christus janua vera.
Translation:
Bright is the noble work; but being nobly bright,
the work should brighten the minds,
so that they may travel through the true lights,
to the True Light where Christ is the true door.
Nisi Dominus aedificaverit domum
in vanum laboraverunt qui aedificant eam.
Translation:
Except the Lord build the house,
they labour in vain that build it: (Psalm 127: v. 1; King James Bible)
