AN ARRANGEMENT OF THE DUTCH CAROL FOR SATB CHOIR AND ORGAN WITH BRASS QUINTET AND TIMPANI
Set in a new arrangement by Paul Halley for the 35th Annual CBC Christmas Sing-In in Montreal, December 2014, this is a Christmas carol popular among American and Canadian Reformed churches with Dutch ancestral roots. It is translated from the Dutch "Ere Zij God!" and is one of the most beloved carols sung in Protestant churches in the Netherlands. The lyrics are inspired by the song of the angels when the birth of Christ was announced to the shepherds, Luke 2:14. First appearing in Dutch songbooks in 1857, the music is atrributed to F. A. Schultz, possibly 1731, Konigsberg, and is broad in style, in A-B-A form, with an extended, flowing, double-Amen ending. Halley's arrangement opens with a brass fanfare that lifts the carol to majestic heights as the choir enters on a modulation and the voicing swirls in glory and tenderness befitting the text and the joy of Christmas. Simply gorgeous.
Commissioned by Jake and Jocelyne Knoppers in honor of the 35th Annual CBC Christmas SIng-In held at the Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul, Montreal, December 7, 2014.
