COMPOSER'S NOTES
Paul Halley
'The advice, "Go west, young man!", has never really resonated with me, much as I like the American West. It has occurred to me that with music, the further back you go in time, the further east you go in place. To this day the Mediterranean world is one of the cultural hotbeds on the globe. This piece, partly written, partly improvised, is a nod in the direction of the Arab Andalusian folk tradition currently undergoing a great revival. Of course, my fondness for the early French Impressionists comes through loud and clear. In fact, 'Middle Earth' originally had the working title "Iraq Satie".'
