Paul Hallley writes: "This piece comes from my late night drives home following
recording sessions in Litchfield. They always seemed to be misty, foggy
drives with lots of moonlight. I'd pass stone walls and in my tired
state, imagine seeing things. One night as I drove past a graveyard out
of the corner of my eye I saw what looked like an angel sitting on the
stone wall. I was so struck by this image that it has been with me ever
since. - So why is this piece so sad -
why the nostalgia? Maybe because that angel represents a perfect kind of
Love which is unattainable in this life. We get glimpses of it from
time, but the vision I saw on the stone wall spoke of a Love that was
unending, and all-embracing."

The original ensemble
version of this work was created for the 1990 Paul Winter
Consort album, 'Earth: Voices of a Planet', to commemorate the
20th anniversary of Earth Day. The album was nominated for a
Grammy Award in 1991. Performed by the Consort on international
concert tours, this work quickly became an audience favorite and
part of the Consort's standard repertoire. More recently, Paul
Halley has used this work in the Easter Jazz Mass program he has
put together for All Saints Cathedral, Halifax and, in a
previous life, at Trinity Episcopal Torrington.

Alternately strong
and reflective, this reverent, uplifting piece is a beautiful
offering in both worship and concert settings. Halley has a
strong sense of melody and harmony, a boundless range of
technique and an irresistibly affirmative point of view. -
Lee Underwood, Tower Records Pulse
The original ensemble
version of this work was intended for release on the 1991 album,
'Angel On A Stone Wall', featuring ten new Paul Halley compositions.
However, Paul Winter needed additonal material for The Paul
Winter Consort recording, 'Earth: Voices of a
Planet',
so the piece premiered on that album instead. In 1992, Paul Halley's "Appalachian
Morning" was licensed for arrangement to John Williams and The
Boston Pops Orchestra (Patrick Williams, arranger) for release
on "The Green Album", and is often played at Boston Pops July
4th celebrations to date.
'Appalachian Morning' is
frequently licensed for arrangement to marching bands and bugle
corps, and is available in a percussion ensemble arrangement at

Says one listener: "I heard
this piece watching Aimachi Winter Guard several years ago...I
thought this was a Pat Metheny composition; it has the movement
I associate with Pat Metheny's music...Finally, I stand
corrected, and finally learned who wrote this beautiful piece."

"Back in 1990 I was in

had enough ballads on that CD already. Now it has resurfaced

A
haunting, rolling melody that builds in fervor and urgency, then
calms in reflective passages. Aptly named. A beautiful prayer.
"During a stay in Israel, I was part of a private tour of
Jerusalem by a friend from the Hebrew University. We arrived at
a place (called Dominus Flevit) on the Mount of Olives where we
were given the same view of Jerusalem that Jesus saw when he
came to the city on that first Palm Sunday. He understood in his
heart what that ancient city had been through in her first
thousand years, and what lay ahead, and he wept. This music is a
prayer for the peace of Jerusalem. It is a 3,000 year-old
prayer." - Paul Halley
Paul Halley:
"I improvised the seed of this piece at a sound check for our Carnival
show at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in 1988. Paul
Winter loved it, and it developed into a short piano solo. This
is the most PIANOSONG-like piece on the album."
Paul Halley: "During
my years as Music Director at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New
York City I was blessed with the opportunity to write several
musicals for the children of the Cathedral School.
The Prince and the
Pauper was one of them and this piece is taken from that
musical. It is the song that the dying King Henry Vlll sang to
his supposed son who was afraid to be crowned King. Not
realizing he is addressing a pauper instead of the Crown Prince,
Henry gives the child some good advice on how to deal with fear
and doubt in one's life. I wanted to write of that quality of
tenderness between a father and son, when each recognizes the
humanity of the other."

Paul
Halley - notes from Triptych CD (1998) about this piece - "There is a great piper living
here in Connecticut by the name of Mike MacNintch. He must know
hundreds of gorgeous folk tunes from Scotland and Ireland. These
are three that I had previously used in a piece for the Winter
Solstice in New York when Mike was on the stage with the
Consort. I thought an organ improvisation on three Celtic
melodies might be interesting. Most organists don't get to play
Celtic folk tunes very often."
Since many of you
have inquired, we have compiled the names of the three Celtic tunes that Paul Halley weaves
together in this work. The first tune, by Nancy Tunnicliffe, is
called 'Islay Waltz', the second tune, from the border
region of Scotland, is a 9/8 jig called 'Drops of Brandy', and
the
third tune is 'MacCrimmons Lament'.
"Halley
puts the colors, texture, and persuasive power of the pipe organ
into highly pleasurable, easily listenable, emotionally
unfettered contexts. Michael Barone, The American Organist

A masterful
transcription of the original keyboard trio composition from
Paul Halley's Triptych CD. The varying themes and
textures, originally assigned alternatively to piano, pipe organ, and
harpsichord, are all in evidence here on a variety of organ
stops. A swirling,
spiraling, dynamic piece, named for our nearest neighbor galaxy.
A play on sevens forms this contemporary masterpiece.
Paul Halley: "I can't stop playing with sevens and I wanted
a piece that would feature each individual instrument in an
extended solo. The title came long after the piece was recorded.
Friends and family all agreed that the music had a spinning,
spiraling quality but it took weeks to come up with a suitable
name. At one point I got sufficiently frustrated to suggest that
the piece be called 'Prelude No. 11 in A minor'. Those older
composers had it easy."
Playing
music that is at once vibrant and intricately contrapuntal, he
deploys the instruments with a symphonic sense of coloration. -

In his
composer notes for the Triptych CD, Paul Halley writes:
"The Winter Solstice of 1996 was tinged with sadness for many of
us since Dmitri Pokrovsky had died at a far too early age that
summer. Nonetheless, the Prokovsky Ensemble still wanted to sing
at the Solstice and I wrote this as a choral work for them in
Dmitri's honor. As to the Triptych CD, I didn't know
whether the music would stand on its own without the
extraordinary timbre of the voices of the ensemble or the
beautiful poetry of Anna Akhmatova and Pushkin. I still don't
know but I wanted to end the album with this piece in honor of
the memory of one of this century's most courageous and generous
musicians."

Summer would not be
summer without some serious gunk-holing on the South Shore of

think of fog, and the sound of surf on the Ironbound Breakers

not only mysterious but timeless. Lovers of hymnody and English
folk-song will detect the melody Kingsfold in a rare 5/4

This
delightful trio keyboard composition is from
Paul Halley's Triptych CD. The opening iteration of the
jig theme is heard from the harpsichord, with the piano then
taking things further in a rolling, melodic form, with the organ
adding atmosphere and breadth of space. A second, broader,
almost majestic, theme enters midway in the piano, played
against the original jig in the harpsichord. A joyful, somewhat
cheeky, keyboard tag game, that delights and uplifts.
