Description/Remarks
LL-VG441 SATB "Soldier, Won't You Marry Me?" by Paul
Halley, is number III in the six-song cycle 'Love
Songs For Springtime', composed 1986 for the Ottawa Choral Society, Brian Law, director.
The works in the song cycle are the settings of
traditional English folk texts and each song
describes a different perspective on love. 'Soldier,
Won't You Marry Me?' is a whimsical piece that tells
the story of a soldier who tricks a female admirer
into buying him clothes for a wedding before she
discovers that he is already married. Text anon.
Commissioned 1986 by the Ottawa Choral Society,
Brian Law, director.

Soldier, Won't You Marry Me?
from 'Love Songs
for Springtime' Text: Traditional English
Music: Paul Halley
Soldier, soldier, won't you marry me? It’s O a fife and a
drum. How can I marry such a pretty girl
When I’ve no hat to put on?
Off to the
tailor she did go As hard as she could run,
Brought him back the finest was there, Now
soldier put it on.
Soldier, soldier,
won't you marry me? It’s O a fife and a drum.
How can I marry such a pretty girl When I’ve
no coat to put on?
Off to the tailor she
did go As hard as she could run, Brought
him back the finest was there,
Now soldier put it on.
Soldier,
soldier, won't you marry me? It’s O a fife
and a drum. How can I marry such a pretty
girl When I’ve no shoes to put on?
Off to the shoe shop she did go As hard as
she could run, Brought him back the finest
was there, Now soldier put them on.
Soldier, soldier, won't you marry me? It’s O
a fife and a drum. How can I marry such a
pretty girl And a wife and baby at home?
Off to the tailor...
Off to the...
And a wife and baby at home!
